Por costumbre estamos sometidos a horarios, obligaciones y responsabilidades que en muchos de los casos, no son tanto de nuestro agrado...Sin embargo, tenemos otros aspectos ricos, que nos confortan y nos dan ese subidón que es necesario para seguir atravesando esta senda que cada cual se ha impuesto.

En este Otoño e Invierno, debido a las pésimas condiciones climáticas, me ha dado tiempo a disfrutar las cosas de otra manera, a entender que es sano romper con aquellas tradiciones y manías absurdas, por ello es hora de volver a cargar la película en la cámara y regresar a mí lugar. Esta es la agenda de horarios, obligaciones y responsabilidades de un visionero y editor. Y, a lo largo de este año 2012, Radical Surf Magazine tiene sus "5" ediciones en la calle puntualmente.

More than 13,000 votes were cast during our 2011 Photo of the Year contest, and Oahu’s Zak Noyle came out on top. Zak captured a rare moment at Teahupoo through his fisheye lens, combining barrels, blue water, sunlit mountains and a full freaking rainbow that seems too good to be true. With Christian Redongo as his alibi, voters found Zak to be fully deserving of this honor.

Congratulations on your 2011 Photo of the Year.

Thank you so much, that’s amazing! It was crazy, I was trying to get all my friends to vote and to pump it up everywhere. I wanted everyone to at least see it, and vote how they wanted to, you know?

Talk us through the shot.

That was a trip that I took [to Tahiti] with Red Bull to film a project called Momentum. I went down with Jamie O’Brien, Jesse Merle-Jones, and Travis Watanabe. We were there for a week filming, and it was a documentary on myself and what motivates me.

It was an amazing afternoon with just my friends out in the water. There were five guys in the water with pristine conditions. It wasn’t huge, but I saw that rainbow forming. I was shooting fisheye, and I was quite close in, so I kind of kicked back toward the channel and framed it up like that. It was just a quick moment, it only lasted for two waves, and it just happened to be a setup.

That surfer who’s in the shot, Christian Redongo, was one of the guys who were staying at the same place as us. He helped with the boats and water safety and everything else for us, and he was just having a quick surf. He’s a good friend, and from Hawaii also, which is pretty cool.

I feel like it’s so special to get a shot with someone who is not necessarily Kelly Slater or Dane Reynolds and it can go so far. It really shows it’s the best shot that wins, it doesn’t need to have a star name tacked on to it in order to be noticed or appreciated.

Did you know instantly when you took the shot that you had something special?

I didn’t know how good it was. I saw it and was like, “Oh, that was sick.” I didn’t really say too much, I saw how it formed and how he stood up. All the elements just came together at that point.

I went back to the SURFER office and showed [Photo Editor] Grant [Ellis], and he was like, “Oh, this is amazing.” It took me awhile to see it, because I was looking at it so many times down there, to realize it was something special and different.

How do you feel about your competition, the other photographers and photos you were up against?

Those are some of the best photographers in the world, and the best photos, literally, of the year. I think everyone’s shit is amazing!

I love that shot of Bruce that Todd Glaser shot—it’s one of my favorite photos of all time. I’m so jealous that I didn’t shoot it. When I see a photo that I really like I get jealous that I didn’t get to shoot it—I mean I’m stoked for Todd, I love Todd and he’s a good friend—but the fact is that I’m jealous. I’m like, “damn, I wish I was there.” That shot is something I wish I could say was my own. I just think it’s amazing. And Burkard’s shot as well—I love his backlit stuff, it’s amazing.

How does this wrap up your 2011?

I’m stoked, it was an amazing year. A lot of things happened in my favor, but I think it’s going to be an even better year in 2012. I couldn’t have done this without my family and friends. I have such a good support team of friends and family that put this out to help me, for the world to see. I think that’s just amazing that they do that for me, for the love.

Tell us about your recent photographic adventures with your iPhone.

When I saw that the iPhone was coming out with an 8-megapixel camera, I instantly flashed to my first camera, which was a 20D, and that was 8-megapixel. I thought, “Why is this any different?”

You gotta keep thinking differently, and in this world everyone wants everything instantly. It used to be like, “Wait a week until I get the film back, then I’ll mail it to you.” Now it’s like, “Hey Zak, you shot Pipeline today? Email me all the high-res photos tonight so we can have it on the site tomorrow or in the mag next week.”

I just put two and two together. People want to see this instantly. You’re not going to get the crazy shots, the camera will always rule, but you can send a photo instantly and have it uploaded, which is unreal. I’ll be sitting out at Jaws instantly uploading shots to Instagram and Twitter, and I’m pretty sure no one has done that before. I really am going to explore more and keep working—my real camera is always going to be the priority, but the fact that I take a second one out there in my pocket and get something different is what I’m going to keep trying to do. There are so many possibilities I don’t even think we’ve touched on yet.

Se nos ha ido el año en cinco ediciones a base de tesón, sacrificio, compromiso, pasión y un objetivo, llamémosle de esa manera, pero hemos mimado, regado y cuidado de los que siempre han estado y nos hemos encontrado a lo largo de este inestable y sin sentido de año. Recuerdo este proyecto como si hubiese sido ayer, y estamos hablando cerca de 18 años...No es increíble, ni extraño, como mucha gente nos ha comentado. El alma de esta reducida casa, está en el día a día, en mantener el espíritu y una constancia que nunca se ha visto forzada, sino todo lo contrario, relajada, disfrutando de todo lo que rodea a la cultura del surf.

Manuel Lezcano cierra el año en bermudas, en una ola sublime, de muchísimas anécdotas, generaciones y belleza descomunal. Es el chico de la portada, un surfer que domina muchas situaciones en momentos comprometidos, donde a veces, es mejor ser simplemente un observador. "El Confital y Lezcano es nuestro regalo de navidad".
QUIKSILVER NY nos animo a seguir de cerca el primer CT, en Long Island, NY. Fuimos y lo pasamos en grande, compartiendo las vibraciones que desprende la energía de la cosmopolita urbe, la cual, tiene uno de los mejores beachbreaks del planeta.
EL CONFITAL se ha caracterizado en ser uno de nuestros spots más fotografiados, donde la gente y el entorno, nos hacen acudir cada año.
RUMBO SUR entro sin más, cogiéndonos por sorpresa, pero ahí estaba el fotógrafo Ginés para confirmar lo mucho que se hablo de aquellos días nunca vistos. Franito lo recordaba como Padang.

Entre el verano y este tardío Otoño, siempre hay historias para contar, muchas, de esas cotidianas, pero que cada año se diferencian o no. Lo cierto de todo esto, es la viva presencia de la fotografía, de como nuestros momentos pasan rápidamente sin darnos cuenta, y algunos los captamos a modo de trabajo o pasión. Ya dudo sobre lo que escribo, es necesario estas palabras absurdas, carecerán de sentido. ¿No son realmente las imágenes las que al final, se comen las palabras?... Pensándolo mejor, estaremos mal acostumbrados a tener que hacer por norma, una presentación para entender lo siguiente?...Escribir, ¿una manera de entendernos mejor?...No lo tengo claro, cuando sigo creyendo que los libros que más asombro me han causado, son paginas en blanco con una imágen que me lleva varios minutos el terminar de leerla, en entender, disfrutar, e imaginarme muchos de los motivos que están en esa composición.

1 - Jonathan Glez, que desde que tiene a Nike, sigue haciendo lo que quiere. Llego el principio del fin, el verano.
2 - CT en Long Island, NY. Muchos pusieron en duda esta kilométrica costa...El surf fue bueno, cojonudo y sobresaliente.
3 - Manhattan, alrededores propios de suelo y estilo americano.
4 - Hubieron tubos, siempre los hubo y estarán de por vida. El Confital QS 2010.
5 - Prospero, una despedida amarga e imborrable.
6 - Matías Hernández finalizando el veranito en Las Palmeras.
7 - Nico Kali en uno de los primeros mares del Otoño.
8 - Cantábria nos fallo, en concreto el Brusco.
9 - La gente de Meñaka, Zumo y Aritz.
10 - Puerto de Bilbao después de intensos baños en Mundaka, el Acanti, Meñaka, Sopelana y tantos otros de manera extraordinaria. Viento suroeste, con dirección noroseste, ya sabes donde voy!!!

Después de cuatro largas e interminables conexiones, pisar este territorio te hace reflexionar de donde vienes y si realmente quieres seguir con tu estilo de vida. Nosotros estamos donde nos ha tocado evolucionar en medio de un caos consumista, pero ¿que hay de esa vida tranquila en plena natura?...Me planteo lo beneficioso que seria un nuevo despertar, solo trabajar para comer, en medio de la nada. Cada uno de nosotros necesitamos cambios, pues a fin de cuentas el ser humano, sabe adaptarse. Nómadas o no, el destino final o momentáneo, es personal. Aka, no es un lugar turístico, es tierra y refugio de tormentas y durísimos inviernos a - 20º C. El parque nacional de Denali, esquimales aborígenes, el caribú, el alce, el oso grizzly, el lobo, el Océano Ártico, monte McKinley, ballenas, la península de Seward, Fairbanks, rodeado por los océanos Ártico y Pacífico, comparte frontera con Canadá, y está separado de Rusia por el estrecho de Bering. A L A X S X A Q, tu generosidad es ilimitada y sobra decir que nuestras vivencias, es parte indispensable de nuestro desarrollo. Mery, Carol y un servidor.

Fotograficamente, es el lugar para el medio y gran formato, sea, 6x6, 4x5, 8x10. Polaroid Land y la Bronica RF 645 de 6x4.5, fueron las principales cámaras usadas. Película y papel. Estas son algunas muestras que revelan los más de 50 años del perfecto estado de la Polaroid Land. La Hasselblad XPAN panorámica, no pudo estar, pero en breve vereís sus extraordinarios negativos de 24x65mm.

El hecho de cumplir sus "25 años" como uno de los eventos más viejos del continente europeo, hemos querido reflejar a través del local y escritor Jaji Iglesias, una verdad contada con estilo, gracia y un toque muy personal sobre las vivencias de aquella época.

CODIGO LIQUIDO
Un recorrido visual sobre los principales factores que nos llevan a estar pendientes de las mareas, borrascas, viajes. En este report, sobran las palabras, las imágenes dicen lo mucho que nos atrapa el "S U R F I N G".

NIXON CHALLENGE LOFOTEN
Los chicos de Nixon Europa apostaron por estas islas lejanas e insólitas. Todos estamos familiarizados con el calor, pero cuando debes ponerte un traje de 6mm, con botas y guantes de 7mm, tu visión y manera de actuar, es nueva y recompensante. Dejate llevar por estas latitudes.
